DG Mike's January 2022 Newsletter
Vocational is defined as relating to a vocation, an occupation, or employment. Whereas, service is defined as the action of helping or doing work for someone. For most of us, we spend our adult lives focused on attaining success (however we personally define success) in the employment, profession, or vocation we engage in. Whereas, in Rotary when it comes to vocational service, our focus is on: 1) adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public; 2) the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that Rotarians engage in; and 3) using our vocational talents to solve the problems of society and meeting the needs of our communities. So, we as individuals tend to focus on our inner goals whereas in Rotary, we focus more on outer goals which will do good works in the world. In Rotary, we use our expertise, our experience, and knowledge to improve the lives of those not as fortunate as us.
