Dear Rotary District 5830 Rotarians,As we move through March 2026, Rotary International brings into sharp focus a universal need that touches every community, every day: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene—WASH. As your District Public Image Director, and I’m honored to share how this month’s RI focus resonates with our work, our values, and our shared responsibility to improve lives across the globe.
Water is fundamental to life, yet for too many individuals, clean drinking water and reliable sanitation remain distant luxuries. In many parts of the world, families spend hours each day collecting water, often from sources that are unsafe. Children miss school because illness or water collection chores keep them from learning. Parents worry about the health of their households, and communities grapple with preventable diseases that drain scarce resources and opportunity. When we speak of WASH, we speak of dignity, health, and the future—everyday basics that we in America often take for granted.
Rotarians in District 5830 have a powerful role to play. Supporting Rotary International’s WASH initiatives means more than funding projects; it means delivering sustainable relief that can transform communities for generations. Your contributions to The Rotary Foundation enable life-changing programs that address water supply and treatment, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education. The impact can be profound: safe wells and clean water reduce disease and free time for education and economic activity; improved sanitation reduces the spread of illness; and hygiene education builds habits that protect health long after a well is drilled or a latrine built.
It is striking to note how cost-effective some WASH solutions can be around the world. In many regions, a new or rehabilitated water source can be established for a fraction of the cost one might expect in more developed contexts. Your philanthropy, strategically allocated through RI WASH initiatives, can therefore yield amplified value—providing essential services to people who need them most, often with lasting, community-led impact. This is the extraordinary fit between Rotary’s mission and the practical realities faced by desperate communities: meaningful, measurable change achieved through thoughtful stewardship of every dollar.
I invite you to reflect on what WASH means to you and to your circle of influence. If you already have a cause that is dear to your heart, I commend you for your dedication and encourage you to consider expanding your support to WASH initiatives through The Rotary Foundation. If WASH is not yet a priority for your club’s giving, I urge you to consider it with openness and curiosity. Your involvement can make a real and present difference in the lives of people who need clean water and safe sanitation today.
As Rotarians, we are bound not only by friendship and service but by a responsibility to act where help is most needed and most effective. The March emphasis on WASH provides a focused opportunity to mobilize our clubs, harness our networks, and channel our generosity toward a cause that embodies the Rotary ideal of service above self. I encourage you to engage in conversations within your clubs, explore project opportunities through RI and partner organizations, and consider a gift to The Rotary Foundation that aligns with WASH goals. Your support can help fund drilling a well, constructing and maintaining safe sanitation facilities, and delivering essential hygiene education—often in communities that have waited far too long for these basic necessities.
Thank you for the leadership you show in your own communities and for the global impact you help Rotary achieve. The work of WASH is not abstract for those who will drink clean water tomorrow or who will attend school rather than spending their days seeking water. It is real. It is urgent. And it is well within our reach when we unite our efforts and give with intention.
If you would like to discuss WASH projects, share outcomes from your clubs, or explore ways to amplify your giving through the Rotary Foundation, please do not hesitate to reach out. I’m here to support you in lifting this essential cause and to help ensure that Rotary District 5830 remains at the forefront of impactful, compassionate service.
With warm regards and in Rotary fellowship,
