ROTARY DISTRICT 5830 FOUR-WAY SPEECH CONTEST

The District Committee for the Four-Way Speech Contest would like to extend to your club a special invitation to participate in the District 5830 Speech Contest.

The district contest will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2009.

ELIGIBILITY

1.   Each Rotary Club in district 5830 may enter one contestant per school district which they support. (The winner of your local contest(s).) Each contestant must be accompanied by a sponsor from his or her local club.

2.   Contestants must be currently enrolled in high school.

3.   No contestant who has previously won first place in the district will be eligible to compete.

RULES AND SCORING GUIDELINES

1.   Subject: the speech must be based on the topic: "Of the Things We Think, Say, or Do, when MIGHT the Rotary Four-Way Test NOT Apply?"

2.   Delivery: the speech need not be given from memory, but it should not be read.

3.   Length of Speech: the speech should not be shorter than (5) minutes, nor longer than seven (7). The district committee will provide a timer for the contest.

4.   Content: each speech must be original in content relating to the topic.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST

The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say, or do:

1.   Is it the TRUTH?

2.   Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3.   Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4.   Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

COMPETITION PROCEDURE

1.   Each club may enter one contestant per school district in which they serve.

2.   Each contestant must be accompanied by a member of the sponsoring club.

3.   The contest will begin promptly at

4.   Speeches will be judged on a) content, b) organization, and c) delivery. A sample scorecard is enclosed.

5.   The judges will select first, second, and third place winners.

LOCATION

The 2008-09 Contest will be held in Idabel, OK at the Mary H. Herron Conference Center of the Museum of the Red River, 812 E. Lincoln Road  [Hwy 70 South Bypass, 1/4 mile east of Hwy 259].  The phone number is (580) 286-3616.   

REGISTRATION FEES

1.   A registration fee of $50.00 per contestant will be paid by each club sponsoring a contestant. The noon luncheon for the contestant and his/her sponsoring Rotarian is included in this fee. This registration should be paid before January 10, 2009

2.   Parents and other guests are invited to the noon luncheon at their own expense. Please arrange for lunch tickets ($15.00) at the registration desk.

CONTESTANT PROCEDURES

1.   Each contestant should report to the contestant headquarters after registering.

2.   There will be a drawing at 8:30 AM to determine speaking order for each contestant.

REGISTRATION FORMS

1.   A registration form is enclosed. Please return the registration form with your check by to allow adequate time to plan for the number of contestants.
